Numerical simulation of complex flow processes using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is an integral part of Top's R&D. CFD allows for an accurate understanding of the flow patterns around impellers and in mixing tanks.

Impellers can be optimized via CFD to efficiently meet process requirements with lower power input.


First, the overall flow field and local velocities must be determined. This is necessary to avoid areas with low mixing intensity and the location of feed devices or heat exchangers. The hydraulic loads on these components will be derived from the CFD, which are inputs for their design using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). CFD post-processing tools are suitable for visualizing the actual process situation.
Knowledge of turbulence intensity is fundamental to the design of many mixing processes. The dispersion of gases or liquids or the stress on sensitive crystals is determined by turbulence parameters. CFD provides the local distribution of such parameters, so that different impeller types can be compared with regard to process results. In this way, heat transfer coefficients on coils, tube bundles or plates can be calculated even under very complex geometries.
